Nancy Patricia D’Alesandro is of largely Italian descent. She matriculated from the Catholic all-girls Institute of Notre Dame High School in Baltimore, and then graduated from (now) Trinity Washington University in 1962 with a BA in political science. Her first job was as an intern for Senator Daniel Brewster, and it was around the same time that she met Paul Frank Pelosi, who she married in 1963. They moved to San Francisco, where she became more involved in politics, becoming a member of the California Democratic Party, then the Democratic National Committee, and subsequently holding several party positions in California, until being elected to the House of Representatives from the 5th district in 1987, and being re-elected 10 times. Her net worth would rise steadily.

Pelosi filled several committee positions in Congress before being elected Minority Whip for the Democrats in 2001, and then Minority Leader the following year, the first woman to hold either position. In 2007 she was elected the 60thSpeaker of the House of Representatives, again the first woman, a position she held until 2011. During her time as Speaker, Nancy Pelosi was viewed rather unfavorably by the voters, of whom 64% had a negative attitude towards her. When Pelosi finished her four year run as the Speaker, she went on to participate in the election for the position of Minority Leader in 2011, again winning and in which she has remained.

As with many other politicians, Nancy Pelosi has not managed to avoid controversy and allegations during her career. In 2011, Pelosi with several other members of the Congress, was accused of utilizing information from closed sessions in order to receive money from companies and individuals on the stock market. Even though Pelosi denied such accusations, these allegations did not help her win over the voters. However, despite such controversy, Nancy Pelosi is a respected politician, who was honored with the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2007, and was even featured in a list of the “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women” compiled by Forbes magazine.

In her personal life, such as it is, Nancy has been married to Paul Frank Pelosi since 1963, and they have five children. Nancy and Frank are still based in San Francisco.
